I was not officially diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder until I had a major breakdown several years ago. It came out of nowhere. I couldn't control the ruminating and the fear, which in turn spiked my adrenaline so that my heart pounded in my chest non-stop. I couldn't sleep, I had digestive issues and sudden weight loss. I couldn't control my mind and my body went into panic mode. This piece reflects how cancerous our mental state can be to our physical well being. The eye of the snake is my own eye, watching as my own brain turns against me. The hands belong to the nurses and therapists who helped put me back together. The sigils are runes which are said to protect the bearer from drowning and end strife.

Clinical depression causes physical pain, it is enervating, and even the simplest tasks become insurmountable when everything seems pointless. Depression's impact on functioning and well-being has been compared to that of chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes. This compositions reflects the growing darkness, the pain, and the band-aids we use to hold ourselves together.
